Which thinner to clean gun
I went to home depot and bought a "Paint Thinner" to clean gun..is this OK?
OR should I use lacquer thinner instead?

It's okay if your shooting oil based paint, ie Rustoleum or implement paint or maybe enamels. You might want to use Lacquer thinner for a cleaner if your using acrylic enamels, urethanes. You could buy, gun wash from your local body shop supply comapnies.Originally Posted by Choppers_rule

I have used regular paint thinner to clean my spray gun in a pinch, while using enamels..........48

You have to be careful on which "thinner" you get. I made the mistake of purchasing the Thinner from Home Depot for gun cleaning and when it came time to use it the stuff didn't work. Most Lacquer Thinner's should work and can be had cheap at any autobody supplier or even at some parts stores.

Any automotive grade lacquer thinner will work fine for gun cleaning. "Paint thinner" from hardware stores etc are in most cases just mineral spirits. Will not work for gun cleaning lacquer, acrylic enamel or urethane type paints.

There's also a special "gun cleaner" sold just for that.
I keep a gallon of that for soaking the parts after cleaning with
regular thinner. you have to be careful with that stuff though,
plastic cups left to long can become etched.:cool:

I always use lacquer thinner from Lowe's to clean my guns and body filler spreaders. The important issue is to clean it immediately but if you do leave some bits and pieces of paint in some areas a good soak in lacquer thinner will loosen those up. Good for wiping uncured overspray from glass, chrome, etc. as well.

You should be able to buy lacquer thinner for way less than $10.00 a gallon,
check the price at a auto paint store.
It's also much cheaper when buying in a 5 gallon size.
I think my 5 gal costs less than $30.
There's also a cheaper version available called "wash thinner"
It's plenty good for cleaning with.
